“My self-care is not an act of self-indulgence, it is an act of self-preservation and that in itself is an act of political warfare.” -Audre Lorde
When specifically, tackling the questions, in spite of oppression brought on by society’s response to our intersecting identities, how do we manage to thrive for ourselves and our people and How do we uniquely interpret and engage the roadblocks we encounter? I began to think about how personal and communal affirmation has enabled me to feel grounded, comforted and sure of myself even in treacherous circumstances. For my workshop, I propose making Affirmation Jars. Affirmation Jars are jars with written affirmations in them, used whenever needed. In my workshop, each person will construct an Affirmation Jar, affirming themselves, in addition to writing an affirmation for each person in the workshop with them. All affirmations will go in personal jars to be used when needed.
